The Legends of Runeterra card game shares similarities to the mobile card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Both games are similar to classic card games, but with a different style of gameplay. The Noxus card represents your opponent's stronghold. Each one starts out with 20 HP; if it loses all that health, the match ends in defeat for you. The goal of each turn is to place cards in a formation that will attack your opponent. When you're the attacker, place cards next to your opponent's Noxus card with the goal of destroying it. Defensive players use their opponent's cards to create defensive strategies to combat them. They should block their opponent's cards from being destroyed and avoid being outmaneuvered by Noxus. First, two stages of the round come into play. The first one involves calling cards in line with current trends. Next, the cards are used to complete the round. If your opponent doesn’t have enough cards to block your summons, they have the opportunity to attack your Noxus directly at the end of the Round. Card games require players to consider the mana they have available in each round of a match. This is because when both players or run out of mana, the round ends. After this point, players are restored to mana and begin a new round. High-quality cards draw more cards than their lower-quality counterparts, which significantly impacts a strategy's outcome. These more rare and powerful cards require more mana to play, which early players can by to find better cards.

In League of Legends, card games Legends of Runeterra are set in the game's vast lands. Playing the game and collecting cards gives players the opportunity to explore the 6 regions featured in the game: Noxus, Freljord, Demacia, Ionia, Piltover & the Shadow Isles. Cards in Legends of Runeterra feature champions from each region; players can choose their favorite champion to them on an adventure. During this adventure, they'll learn insights and stories about their hometowns.

The card can be categorized into three sections: Champion, Spell and Skill. The Champion section is the main focus of winning a match, and most cards in Legends of Runeterra originally came defaulted to this section. After acquiring new cards, your strategies grow more diverse. Additionally, Champion cards can level up and increase their stats thanks to their third ability. Compared to other League of Legends Betas, Legends of Runeterra has a small number of champions; only 24 out of 148 are currently included.
